Home watch for Walloon Lake cottages
Walloon is not on Little Traverse Bay. It is the inland lake south of Petoskey, with the village at the north end and cottages around the points and bays. M-75 ties it to Petoskey and Boyne City. In August the lake is boats and family weeks. By January it is a frozen bowl, long driveways, and a lot of places that last had a light on at deer season. If you own here and live somewhere else, a neighbor on the next point is not a watch.

Why empty cottages fail on Walloon
Inland lakes fail quietly. There is no drawbridge traffic and no harbor crowd to notice a dark house. Heat set to 50, a well house that ices, a loft that takes melt from an ice dam — those are the ordinary disasters. Mice find the bag of dog food. A tree comes down on a lean-to you cannot see from the village.
The lake is not one neighborhood. Village streets, the north end, and the far points are different drives in snow. Some places are still true seasonal water. Some are year-round mechanicals in a cottage envelope. Tell us which. Closing the water does not close out a kicked door or a roof that is dumping into a porch.
Walloon has literary geography (the Hemingway family cottage, Windemere, is local history on the north shore). That is a landmark, not a service claim, and it does not mean the lake is being looked after.
Horton Bay sits between Walloon and Lake Charlevoix. Mention it on the form if that is your road.

Routine home watch. Heat, leaks, power, glass and doors, pests, roof line, well house / crawl when we can see it, and whether anyone has been in.
Storm and freeze checks. Extra visits after heavy snow, ice, and deep cold. A monthly check on a far point is a long gap if Tuesday night was the bad one.
Opening and closing. Spring water-on and fall water-off, with your plumber if the cottage needs more than a valve.

Boyne City is east on M-75 / the lake road. Petoskey is north. Charlevoix is the other big inland lake. Little Traverse Bay shore: Harbor Springs and Bay Harbor. Do not confuse this page with Bay Harbor — different water, different access.

- Is Walloon on the same route as Bay Harbor?
- No. Bay Harbor is a gated resort on Little Traverse Bay. Walloon is an inland lake. We can watch both. They are not the same stop.
- We leave the heat off and blow the lines. Is watch still worth it?
- Yes, if the building still has a roof, glass, and a door. Closing the water does not close out ice dams, broken windows, or a door that has been kicked.
